Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysis is a form of intensive psychotherapeutic work and a highly specialized treatment approach, based on the recognition that individuals often live out lives unaware of the many complex internal factors that determine their emotions and behaviors. Because psychoanalysis seeks to address core problems as well as symptoms, it is a comprehensive treatment for many psychological and emotional difficulties. It encourages greater awareness of inner forces that affect life and may help to develop greater capacity to direct those inner forces that have been out of conscious control. Psychoanalytic treatments are typically more frequent (two, three or four times a week) because of the focus on sustained engagement with inner life and interpersonal dynamics. In psychoanalysis a patient is not only invited to understand their symptoms and life patterns within a broader context of their life, but also to develop capacities to be with complexities found in their minds, bodies, histories, relationships, stories, dreams, and desires. Psychoanalysis is defined by intensive collaborative therapeutic process between patient and the analyst, and is designed to enhance life and relationships through deeper self-understanding.
